Costume Props and Planning

In a sports movie, it is quite obvious that most relevant characters (save for family and spectators) would be in sporting gear. This rule goes mainly for the main characters, allies and rivals. This kind of dressing includes shorts, bottoms, hoodies and sports shirts. Shoes suitable for sport too, of course. For example, running shoes.  Extra accessories include headbands and hats. Even the ‘coach’ of the film would be in scruffy, sporting gear.

However, there will be a shot of the protagonist and antagonist in school.

Specific set: Currently owned.

Navy Blue Nike Dry-fit shorts / Black Nike Shorts

Long-sleeved black sport t-shirt

Standard white sports socks

Nike Running shoes/Spikes/ Adidas Nizza trainers: Grey

Nike Headband – Black

Adidas tracksuit bottoms

Nike Matching Tracksuit bottoms

Miami heat beanie

Formal Wear

Full Nike Tracksuit

Cross Country Spikes (For scenes on grass)

Other Options: Currently Owned.

Nike ‘Run’ sport shirt – light green

Standard Blue Short-sleeved sport shirt

Standard Black white-laced hoody

Nike Academy Sports T-Shirt

Props:

Gold Medal

3 mini hurdles

Cones

Speed Ladder

Stopwatch

Water bottle

Chair

How does this link to my genre?

Very easily. This links to my genre as the wear is suitable and makes sense because of the characters main activity throughout the trailer. The trailer will contain the character working hard in his constant daily struggle of training. Therefore, sports gear would make the most sense when it comes to clothing.

Specific set: (School) –currently owned

Black trousers, white shirt, blue tie, glasses –Protagonist (optional)

-Genuine casualwear

(more of a rough look) – Nike Air forces, skinny jeans/plain jeans, black jacket of any sort – antagonist

Risk Assessment 1-3

Production Name:
Level:
Course:
Name:
Filming Date

Location: School Field

Risk;
  • Tripping over equipment, falling over.
  • The public, getting in the way

Evaluation;
  • Tripping over equipment: Low-medium. This is on a grass field, so the most harm done would be muddy clothes. However I could sustain damage to fingers/wrist if falling ends up on a worst case scenario.
  • No particular harm, apart from public getting in the way of the filming, thus hindering the quality of the production. More harmful to my grade than to anybody physically.

How to Avoid;

  • Execute exercise movements with correct technique, practice off-camera.
  • Go to the field when it is not lunch time or break time, chances of isolation are significantly increased, or simply film in the opposite direction to where the public is.

Location: Peterborough Weight Training Club Gym

Risk:
  • Weight-lifting related injuries.
  • Public
  •
  •

Evaluation:
  •  Weight-lifting related injuries: High. Improper lifting can lead to serious muscle injuries. This includes dropping heavy weight on the body (specific body part varies on technique). This can lead to bruises, lumps and bleeding. Other effects include tearing and the pulling of muscles, injuries that could last weeks.
  • People getting in the way of the shot
How to avoid:
-Lift properly, correct technique. Do not lift anything that I cannot handle. Pratice before hand.
-Simply ask politely for people to stay clear of the filming area

Location: Inside Nene Park Academy

Risk:

  • Tripping over the props
  • Broken equipment
  • Excessive Physical contact

Evaluation & how to avoid: All risks are fairly low. Tripping over props, incidents with broken equipment and excessive physical contact have a very little chance of inflicting injury and if they do, it will be very minor. To avoid tripping, cautionness around the set will be ensured, all equipment will be made sure to be checked beforehand, and instructions will be very clear to actors when it comes to actions.

Conventions

On screen text: disclaimer… “the following preview has been approved for appropriate audiences”

Character introductions: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga

Company: Motion Picture Association Of America, inc.

Music and voice-overs: Sinister music plays. Clips of voices that reveal crucial plot points are shown in the trailer. “My job is to answer one simple question”

From the director of: “The Shallows”, the “commuter” – already attracts a huge audience.

Release date info: this January

Category: Film and Animation

Promotion material: “The commuter”

More conventions of a film:

Voice-overs: These are used on order to give more detail and narrative to the basic plot of the story. It makes clear characters roles, adds a dramatic effect, sheds some light on the significance on specific aspect/scene of a film.

Music: Music is the most go-to source if the effect of a build-up is desired, climax is very easy to achieve if the right music is chosen and placed at the right time. It adds flavour and entertainment to all trailers, complimenting every effect each scene was intended for.

Montage: A series of shots from different points in the film, edited together. Used to tell the story of hard work and improvement. Shows impressive characteristics of a person/thing.

Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis

Film trailer name: Spiderman – homecoming trailer #1

To be included: 1.Cinematography (Camera distance/movement)

2.Mise-En-Scene (Colour, costume, props, lighting, location)

3.Sound (Diegetic [part of the story] Non-Diegetic [Soundtrack])

4.Editing (pace, fade, straight cuts, flash cuts)

5.Performance (dialogue tone, facial expression, body language)

·         This film has the genre of action and comedy. This is made very evident by the extreme pace of the trailer, as well as the dialogue and performance shown in throughout the trailer. It is to give a huge sense of rush to the audience, as well as making them laugh despite the tense, ‘edge-of-your-seat’ kind of feel.  As you can see in the picture, this scene is full of humour. And as you can see in the picture next to it, the character is in a dangerous situation that signifies the build-up of suspense and drama. This is shown by the dopey facial expression.

·         Mise-en-scene: Costume is used in this in order to show the alter-ego of the main character, a key part of the story. In one scene, his and his friends costume is portrayed as ‘nerdy’. Then, that transforms into mysterious and ‘cool’. The way how it is an exact opposite shows the two personas to be the perfect pair-up. The pictures below show this clearly.

·

The editing at the start of the trailer is extremely coherent towards the genre. It is fast-paced, and flashy, image for image, catching attention as mere seconds pass. It is also suitable towards the scene. In the middle of a bank robbery – until the hero steps into the fray and engages the bandits in combat.

Sound: dramatic, deeply based, short sounds every time a punch was thrown, or any other action made in the trailer. The effect of this is to add to flow of intensity towards the scenes. It works as it makes the situation look a lot more lethal and exciting.

The comedic effect is further added to when the scene of his friend catching him climbing on the ceiling. He is shocked and drops a massive glass ornament out of a mixture of being surprised and being frightened. It goes silent briefly in this moment to gain focus on yet another dopey and funny facial expression.

Location; the locations are fitting towards the genre. When there is a call for action, the location will be something really unusual, such as the camera shots from a really high point on the outside of the building, or airborne at high altitudes. When it is just showing his normal life, the location will be something more regular, such as in his room, or at the lunch table. The location really shows a contrast between the two – a superhero and just your normal, average teenage boy.

Lighting: The lighting is normally dark in specific places, but is light in specific scenes of the trailer. Overall, it is mostly low-point lighting due to how it is fitting in the heavy crime fighting scenes, such as the shot with the monster.

Trailer name: Skyfall – Official Trailer

Cinematography, Mise-en-scene, sound, editing, performance
-A trailer that jumps into the action straight from the start. There is rushed an aggressive movements, James bond is in a suit, and a combination with his outfit and his crazy movements, shows that this is a story about a businessman who possesses a high amount of skill and experience to be on these insane missions. This creates meaning as it gives the message to the audience that the plot is going to be intriguing and exciting all the way throughout, and makes the movie more appealing in order to soothe their curiosity of the outcome and origins of the mission. There intense scenes of fighting and jumping from trains, constant shots of life-threatening situations. This is for the effect and meaning of representing the genre of action to a pinnacle point to give the classic ‘James Bond’ feel that is highly regarded in society for a considerable amount of time. There is so much action in the scenes that most of the shots are either long or medium-long shots, in order to show the whole situation. This is further accompanied by the actions of the other characters, speeding in the car (long shot), for the effect of adding to the rushed and fast-paced background of the situation. And the angry woman demanding Bond gets the mission accomplished. It makes it very evident that there is little moments of peace within the whole film, shown by the trailer, giving hints that there will be little signs of relaxation, just pure and clean action. It gives signification that there will be tragedy, death, betrayals, extreme violence and much more in the film. Such a wide range serves as a massive attraction for the targeted audience. This gives the meaning of appeal to the audience in terms of strongly showcasing the type and genre that the
